Billy Diamond (1949-2010) was from the Cree community of Rupert House (now Waskaganish). As Grand Chief of the Grand Council of the Crees of Quebec from 1974 to 1984, he was a key architect of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, the first modern treaty, which he signed in 1975 on behalf of his nation. A seasoned politician, he was also a successful businessman, founding and serving as the first president of Air Creebec. Today, the James Bay Road is named Route Billy-Diamond Highway in his honour.
