Charlie Watt

Signator of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement

Charlie Watt was born in 1944 in the Inuit community of Kuujjuaq, Nunavik. In 1972, he co-founded the Northern Quebec Inuit Association (NQIA), which signed the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement on behalf of the Inuit in 1975. In 1978, he became the president of Makivik Corporation, a legal entity created under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, whose primary mandate was to implement the provisions of the Agreement concerning the Inuit, and to promote the well-being and economic development of northern Nunavik. He was appointed to the Senate in Ottawa in 1983 and served there for 34 years.
