Joe Guanish

Joe Guanish (1931-2017) was elected Chief of the Naskapi Nation in 1968, a position he held for twenty-seven years. In 1978, he signed the Northeastern Quebec Agreement on behalf of his nation, a treaty that granted the Naskapis property rights and exclusive use of significant hunting and fishing territories. He notably contributed to the preservation of the Naskapi language by helping develop the Naskapi Dictionary.
