Matthew Coon Come
Grand Chief of the Grand Council of the Crees for 20 years
Born in 1956 near the Cree community of Mistissini, Matthew Coon Come was Grand Chief of the Grand Council of the Crees of Québec from 1987 to 1999 and again from 2009 to 2017. It was at the end of this second term in 2017 that he signed, on behalf of his nation, the Agreement on Cree Nation Governance with the Government of Canada. This was a significant development in terms of self-government, enabling the nine Cree communities to adopt their own laws. Mr. Coon Come also served as National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations from 2000 to 2003 and, on two occasions, as Chief of the Mistissini First Nation.
