Philippe Piétacho
Chief of the Ekuanitshit Innu First Nation
Philippe Piétacho (1926-2004) was chief of the Innu community of Ekuanitshit for about twenty years. In the 1980s, under Philippe Piétacho's leadership, the Ekuanitshit community, like other Innu communities on the Côte-Nord region that were part of the Conseil Attikamek-Montagnais, undertook to reclaim its rights to the Mingan River. In 1986, in recognition of his community's salmon conservation and enhancement efforts, he was awarded the prestigious Salar trophy by the Fédération québécoise pour le saumon atlantique (FQSA).
