Suzy Basile was born in the Atikamekw community of Wemotaci. Suzy Basile holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in anthropology. Very early on in her career, she chose to dedicate her work to the development of ethics rules for research carried out in First Nation communities. In 2016, she earned a PhD in Environmental Sciences from the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT), becoming not only the first Aboriginal student to receive a PhD from UQAT, but also the first member of the Atikamekw First Nation to get a doctoral degree. Suzy Basile is currently a professor at UQAT’s School of Indigenous Studies and is director of the Indigenous women's research laboratory. More recently, she distinguished herself as co-author of the research report Free and Informed Consent and Imposed Sterilizations Among First Nations and Inuit Women in Quebec.
