Ted Moses
Prominent leader of the Cree Nation
Born in 1950 in the Cree community of Eastmain, Ted Moses served as chief negotiator during the discussions leading up to the signing of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement in 1975. He later served as Grand Chief of the Grand Council of the Crees from 1984 to 1987 and from 1999 to 2005. In the intervening years, he served as Chief of the community of Eastmain. Highly active on the international stage, he was long regarded as "the Cree ambassador to the United Nations." He is also the first Aboriginal person in the history of the United Nations to occupy the prestigious function of rapporteur of a conference of the Human Rights Commission. In 2002, he signed a landmark "nation-to-nation" agreement with Québec Premier Bernard Landry, known as the Paix des Braves (Peace of the Braves).
