A committed activist, Viviane Michel hails from the Innu community of Mani-Utenam in the Côte-Nord region. After holding various positions within her community, she worked as a frontline worker at Maison Messinak, a shelter for aboriginal women in Quebec City. It was in this capacity that she was called upon to sit on the Native Shelters Network of Quebec. Viviane Michel served as vice-president of Quebec Native Women (QNW) for two years before being elected president in 2012, a position she held until 2021. Under her leadership, the organization carried out research on missing or murdered Aboriginal women and girls in Québec.
